General Delivery and Forwarding
Are
you tired of change of address?
When you consider an email address it may be
helpful to consider...
Some questions
are...Can I keep the address forever? How do
I get my mail when I am out of town? What
happens if I change ISPs? Can I make the address meaningful?
When
choosing an email service other than with your
ISP, keep the following in mind.
With Snail
Mail you have FORWARDING and GENERAL DELIVERY
options, if you are going out of town for a time
and/or moving.
For
instance, if you are making a two month trip to
Lopez, Washington for the rainy season you can:
- Let you
mail stack up in Beeville
- Forward
it to a specific address, if you know where
you are going to be staying
- Have
mail sent to the Lopez Post Office General
delivery.
Many FREE
EMAIL services force you to go to their site to
pick up your mail after providing the proper
identification. GENERAL DELIVERY is good but has limitations.
Other FREE
EMAIL service allow you to configure you email for
both
- GENERAL
DELIVERY or going to their site to pick up
your mail and
- FORWARDING
by allowing you to configure the free service
to forward you mail to any email address.
anywhere in the world
Consider:
- You
Change ISP:
You have an email address with "You Are
Special ISP" in Beeville --> Number1@YourAreSpecialISP.com
If you change ISP's
because another ISP is cheaper...you are forced to
send a change of email address to all your friend.
Three weeks later, "Mega-Merger ISP"
comes to Beeville. They charge 1/2 what the
cheapest ISP in Beeville charges. You need to now
change your email address to the new ISP.
There is a way to prevent this, cycle of
changing addresses-->Use a Free Email
service that allows you to have an email
address on their mail server that is FORWARDED
automatically to the email address with your
ISP. Or, go to the FREE EMAIL SERVICE's web
site and check your mail
- You
are going to be out of Beeville for an
extended visit.
You are going to Lopez, Washington for a
visit. Your brother has an email address with
a local ISP in Lopez. If you are using a free
email service with FORWARDING, you
- go
to the free service's web page
- Sign
in
- Configure
the FORWARDING address from you local
ISP to the address in Lopez.
- Now,
all mail using the FREE EMAIL SERVICE is
automatically forwarded to Lopez
- and
you will receive you mail when the
person in Lopez checks his mail.
- Or,
you can configure the FREE SERVICE to be
General Delivery and use the ISP
connection in Lopez to go to the web site
and check your mail.
If you have
an email address with one of the many free email
services, and if
- all your
friends use this address,
- when you
changes ISPs
- Go
on a trip
- all your
friends would not have to change their email
address books.
Get
an email address from a FREE EMAIL SERVICE early
on in you Internet experience and you should NEVER
have to send mail to family and friends requesting
them to change their email address books.

Firewalls
are programs that help protect you from those
who will pilfer inside YOUR COMPUTER. The
link below provides insight into "Fire
walls." What? When? How? I have used the Zone
Alarm for a while and it definitely has
caught a few intruders. Read what Steve Gibson's Shield's
Up and determine if you want/need a Firewall.
Firewalls
as with many aspects of computers require some
education. If you will read and/or print his
articles in Shields Up, you will have a start at
least in educating yourself. As
a reference, PC World have a direct links to
Gibson Research and Zone Alarm

Beeville.Net
does not have any connection with Gibson Research or
Zone Alarm other than:
- We have known about and
used Steve Gibson's SpinRite in the past.
- We
downloaded and installed Zone Alarm.

Five Laws Every PC Owner Should Know
Knowing your rights can give you added leverage
when you get into a scrape with a vendor, a credit
card company, or an Internet pest:
1) Credit Card Billing Problems, 2) Mail Order
Online Shopping, Rebates, 3) Warranties, 4)
Privacy Protection for Children, 5) Spam Overload.

Have you Dialed 911 today?
At
8:00 am on Saturday, April 1 (This is not an April Fool's joke!) the FBI
announced it had discovered malicious code wiping out the data on hard
drives and dialing 911. This is a vicious worm and needs to be stopped
quickly. That can only be done through wide-scale individual action.
Go to http://www.sans.org/newlook/alerts/911worm.htm
for details.
PRESS RELEASE
using the Internet to distribute an electronic press release. FOUR "F"s for
Success. 1) Fast In - a lead of no more than 40 words, 2) Fast
Out - a total of nor more than 200 words, 3) Five W's - who,
what, when, where, and why, 4) For More Information - contact name,
email, URL, and phone. (from Webreview.com "Our New Medium Needs a
New Message" by B L. Ochman, March 24, 2000)

Turn
off and tune in
From one of those lists that get forwarded around
the Internet, here are several warning signs you
may be a little too connected:
- You try to enter
your password on the microwave
- You have a list of
15 phone, pager and e‑mail numbers to reach
your family of three.
- You e-mail your
kid in his room to tell him dinner is ready. He
emails you back: "What's for dinner?" (MORE)

WEB PAGE FORMS: One way to utilize the Internet is to
add the forms capacity of the browsers to gather information, which may be used in
advertisement and or direct contact with customers through mailings or phone calls. MORE
