History of the Beeville Community Chorus

The Beeville Community Chorus has presented many concerts in a number of south Texas communities since its beginning in the fall of 1975 with its founder and artistic director, Dr. James Lee. The organization has presented a special choral Christmas and spring concert at the famous Mission Espiritu Santo De Zuniga, located on the San Antonio River in the state park at Goliad, Texas for more than twelve years. The chorus has performed Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Gounod’s St. Cecelia Mass, Faure’s and Verdi’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and a number of other standard choral repertoire. More than 200 people with standing room only have come to the concert each December and April from all over the state. The December concert several years ago was featured in a Christmas special on HGTV, “Christmas in Texas Small Towns.” This event not only gives the members of the choir the opportunity to perform in a historical venue, but also brings the public to a historical park where they can visit the museum, mission, the Presidio La Bahia, and other historical sites of famous battlegrounds of battles that preceded the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

The choir also performs in Beeville and surrounding area each year including benefit concerts for a number of community projects. For the past seven years the choir has taken educational and performance tours both nationally and abroad. The organization has sung in the Morman Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, University of British Columbia in Victoria, Canada, Smetana Hall in Prague, Czech Republic, Carnegie Hall in New York City, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. These national and international tours give the members of the group the opportunity to experience other world cultures and to perform in historical and well-known venues
