Harry
Wilson, 93, died March 23, 2002 at the Mathis Nursing Center.
He was
born in LaVernia to William Freitag and Thelka Leissner. When he was
two-years-old, his mother remarried John Wilson, who adopted Harry and his
brother, George, and changed their names to Wilson.
He married
Delia Delaney on May 24, 1941. During World War II, he worked as a construction
worker, building runways in Alaska. After the war, he moved back to San Antonio
and worked for Zachary Construction Company. He later worked for the San
Antonio Bus Co., where he retired.
He had
been a resident of Lakeshore Gardens since 1964, In 1971, he, Leota Homer and
led Carson started the Open Door Church in Lakeshore Gardens. The church was
eventually moved and the named changed to Lake View Baptist Church, where he
remained an active deacon until two weeks prior to his passing.
He will be
remembered as the “Big Fisherman,” who always caught the biggest fish and
always gave it away.
He will be
missed by his friends and especially Charley and Hazel Young, who cared for him
for 27 years. Charley called him his oldest grandson.
Survivors include a
sister-in-law, Millie Wilson, and two nieces, Delia Talbert and Patty Rendon,
all of San Antonio.
