How to be informed...the continuing saga...
     Beeville.Net Comments October 15, 2001

One great enemy of knowledge and wise choices is, "Choosing not to take the time and make the effort to be accurately informed."

Literally, at your fingertips you can read and study most if not all of the ideas that have molded our world. The old and musty ideas are as close as the freshly "cut" ones. The raging storm of current events sweeps over our life with conflicting ideas and emotions. Taking the time to throw out your sea anchor and "become" informed  is not generally our first choice. In a world promoting "instant" solutions and "quick" fixed to complex, ambiguous problems, taking the  time to think for yourself is at a premium.

Truth whether written/stored on rock and clay, papyrus reeds, animal skins, cellulous, glass, or magnetized particles IS ESSENTIAL for all free people. Many will tell you what, when, how, and why to believe and act. The question all people have to answer is, will I make my decision or will I let someone make my decision for me.

  • In my country, USA, no one has the right, privilege, or responsibility to unilaterally determine for us what we believe, think, or do.
  • In my country, USA, we have the liberty to take the time/effort to be personally informed.
  • In my country, USA, we have the freedom to come to our own conclusions and act on our conclusions.

I suppose that one "logical outcome" of liberty and freedom is anarchy. However, it is my thought that truth leads to responsibility--Responsibility which balances personal "stuff" with the other's "stuff." Some where along the line I heard, "Your freedom ends at the tip of my nose."

We live in a time of unparallel opportunity to accomplish "stuff" for ourselves while at the same time do things for others.

Emotions often rule the moment.  Truth is often treated as a commodity we buy, use, and discard.

Is it conceivable that we as individuals and groups can take the time and make the effort to work beyond the raging storm of the moment?  OR, will we just add to the winds with our verbiage and beat the sea with our oars.

The Internet:
Mixing of Fresh, Current with "old musty stuff"

Do you wonder if what you read and hear is accurate?

The internet is a information resource unequaled in the history of the world. The following link at North Carolina University will provide you with hundreds of news links. University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The opportunity to research a wide variety of sources in just a few clicks away. Being informed in not only the "instant" box of biscuit mix, but also the time consuming effort of a "homemade" meal made from scratch.

Another information source that the internet provides is "old" books online ready to read. One place to begin is http://www.gutenberg.net/ Project Gutenberg

Propaganda: Detecting
     Beeville.Net October 14, 2001

Discovering truth means we need to realize how others attempt to persuade us to believe or disbelieve.

Most of the propaganda devices utilize emotion and avoid critical thinking.

"How To Detect Propaganda" [Adapted from Clyde Raymond Miller, 33-38. Propaganda Analysis, November 1937]

The Name Calling
used to form a judgment without examining the facts. this device works with good and bad names.
The Glittering Generalities Device
uses "virtue words" that often appeal to emotions of love, generosity by using words which suggest shining ideals. These words are used to "befog" our thinking and avoid the need for critical thinking. "Bad words" make us mad while "good words" make us glad.
The Transfer Device
carrying over the authority, sanction, and prestige of something we respect and revere to something the propagandist would have us accept.
The Testimonial Device
works with "counter-testimonials" as well.
The Plain Folks Device
device which attempts to gain support by saying "people" are in support of this or that.
The Card Stacking Device
device which stacks the cards against the truth. Uses under and over emphasis of the facts.
The Band Wagon Device
"everyone is doing it"

Other Propaganda devices

The Slippery Slope

if you accept one tainted or false idea, that will lead to accepting other false beliefs. One step off the true and narrow and your belief system will begin an "inevitable." similar to bandwagoning in that if you leave "our wagon" you must climb aboard "that wagon."
